DESCRIPTION: French gilt and patinated bronze 8 days, time and strike, mantel clock, with a bronze figure of a grooming cat sitting on a pillow, the cat with nodding head, c1830, the dark patinated case with gilt trim decorated with acanthus and anthemion, gilt metal dial with engine turned center and black painted Roman numerals, Breguet style hands, and dial trim in the Grecian taste, the pendule a Paris movement with silk thread suspension striking the hours and half hours on a bell, the cat seated on a gilt pillow licks his paw as his head nods powered by a separate movement wound through the left side of the case
CONDITION: The case is dirty, but the gilt and patinated surfaces are in good condition. The dial is dirty as well, and some of the numerals and chapter ring have been touched up. The hands are a bit rusty. The movement ticks and strikes, but will need service. The pendulum is missing. The movement that drives the cat is fully wound, and will tick, but also needs service. The screws which attach this movement through the case side are replacements. The rod and pivot for the cats head will at least need to be adjusted and may require replacement . Previous attempts to reattach this assembly and restore the cats motion have not been successful. The cat also had a tongue, which is now missing. The cat has glass eyes which are in very good condition. Case has had a "door" added to back to help exclude dust - would originally have been displayed under a dome. Ht 18.5"
